my husbands favorite dinner… croque monsieur

have you ever seen the movie It's Complicated? that movie happens to be our favorite movie! i always get inspired to cook, dream about my 'next' kitchen, how i'd like to have my garden, and possibly a bakery {the last idea would never happen, but if i did have a bakery, it would totally be like the one in the movie}. if you're familiar with the movie, then you must remember the part where she whips up these amazing sandwiches called Croque-Monsieurs.

Croque-Monsieurs are basically a glorified hot ham and cheese... the kind that you can't stop eating. My husband is completely addicted to them and requested them for his birthday, and  just because it's Sunday and he's making sure that is what we're having for Father's Day. Croque-Monsieurs have easily become my go-to when i'm expecting company. They are a crowd pleaser and  just too good to not share. Once you eat one, you'll be hooked, too. I promise!

Now to the directions:

2 tablespoons of unsalted butter

3 tablespoons of all purpose flour

2 cups of Hot Milk

1 teaspoon of kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon of fresh pepper

Pinch of nutmeg

5 cups of grated gruyere

1/2 cup of grated parmesan

White sandwich bread, I like to use sliced sourdough

Dijon Mustard

8 ounces of Virginia Ham, sliced but not too thin

Preheat oven to 400. Melt butter in a sauce pan, add flour all at once stirring with a wooden spoon for 2 minutes. slowly add hot milk and whisk together constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and add salt, pepper, nutmeg, 1/2 cup of gruyere and parmesan. set aside.

Toast bread by placing the slices on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes. flip and cook for 2 minutes. once toasted brush one side of the toast with dijon mustard, add a slice of ham to each and sprinkle with gruyere. Top with another piece of toast. Slather the tops with the cheese mixture and top with gruyere. Bake for 5 minutes and then turn on the broiler and broil for 3-5 minutes.
